DIGITALIZATION AND CLOUD | SPATIAL PLANNING
Challenge
The need of centralising and mapping the brownfield sites in Zagreb City and Zagreb Urban Agglomeration in order to efficiently use them for communities’ benefits.
Solution
Atlas of Brownfield Sites in the Zagreb Urban Agglomeration is a quantitative and qualitative overview of brownfield sites in the Zagreb Urban Agglomeration.
The City of Zagreb collected data on brownfields in cooperation with 29 cities and municipalities, members of the Zagreb Urban Agglomeration, in 2019. For each brownfield site, the following data was collected: geographical data (location, total area); previous use of the site; data on possible interim use; planned land use determined by spatial plans; ownership data; data on possible nature or heritage protection measures on site; data on spatial planning procedures; photo documentation. In addition, information on the degree of physical devastation of the buildings or site, possible contamination and developed studies and projects related to the revitalisation of the brownfield site were also collected.
The special GIS database was developed with a total of 84 recorded brownfield sites in the Zagreb Urban Agglomeration, with a total area of 529.24 ha. It contains sites of special interest to the cities and municipalities of the Zagreb Urban Agglomeration, so a large number of brownfield sites that exist in the area (e.g., private owned sites) were not covered by this research.
